A Princely Patron

Wolsey at His Height
Power and ambition
Thomas Wolsey governs through diplomatic reach, wealth, ceremony, and confidence in his ability to manage competing interests. Cromwell serves as his trusted operator, translating grand schemes into practical arrangements.
A vulnerable project
Wolsey’s monasteries-to-colleges plan attracts opposition from people who want the assets for themselves. The king’s marriage crisis adds another unstable burden to a political position already under strain.
York Place Stripped

The Fall Made Visible
Possessions seized
The king’s officials remove Wolsey’s papers, furnishings, vestments, and valuables from York Place. Cromwell helps the household leave for Esher while trying to preserve order and dignity.
The patron diminished
Wolsey’s material world is inventoried and dispersed. Cromwell sees how swiftly a ruler’s favour can turn magnificence into evidence against its former owner.
The Road Ends

Death at Leicester
Arrest and decline
Harry Percy arrests Wolsey at Cawood before his planned enthronement at York. Illness overtakes him during the southward journey, and he dies at Leicester Abbey before reaching the king.
A lasting bond
Cromwell receives the news and preserves Wolsey’s memory through action, loyalty, and the turquoise ring left for him. His patron’s death closes one career and helps open another.
